PG Owner Booked For Molesting Intoxicated Woman In Pune, Case Raises Safety Concerns
Police say the accused allegedly took advantage of a 24-year-old woman’s vulnerable condition at a paying guest accommodation in Chandan Nagar.
A disturbing incident in Pune has once again brought the safety of women living in paying guest (PG) accommodations under scrutiny. The Chandan Nagar Police have registered a molestation case against a PG owner for allegedly sexually harassing a young working woman when she was heavily intoxicated and unable to defend herself.
According to police officials, the incident occurred at around 12.30 am on December 12. The complainant had attended a party with friends earlier in the night, where alcohol was consumed. Police said she allegedly drank excessively, leaving her in a semi-conscious state and unable to walk properly on her own.
Concerned about her condition, her friends brought her back to the PG accommodation. However, instead of ensuring her safe entry into her room, they reportedly left her seated on the staircase of the hostel and went away, leaving her alone and vulnerable.
Police said the accused PG owner was present on the premises at the time and noticed the woman sitting alone on the staircase in an intoxicated condition. Allegedly exploiting the situation, he approached her from behind, forcibly hugged her and behaved in an indecent manner with the intention of outraging her modesty and humiliating her.
In her complaint, the woman stated that the accused’s actions caused her severe mental trauma and embarrassment. After regaining composure, she approached the Chandan Nagar Police Station and narrated the incident in detail.
Based on her statement, police registered an offence under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to outraging the modesty of a woman. The accused has been booked, and further legal action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
The probe is being conducted by Assistant Police Inspector Salve, who confirmed that statements of witnesses are being recorded and additional evidence is being collected. Investigators are also examining CCTV footage from the premises, if available, to corroborate the woman’s version of events.
Police have also indicated that the role of the complainant’s friends, who allegedly left her alone despite her intoxicated condition, is being examined as part of the broader inquiry.
A senior police officer, appealing to women living in PG accommodations to remain vigilant, said, “No one has the right to exploit a woman’s vulnerable condition. Strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty.”
The incident has sparked concern among residents and working women in Pune, particularly those staying in PGs due to work or education. Many have raised questions about the accountability of PG owners and the need for stricter background verification, surveillance, and safety protocols in such accommodations.
Police officials said they would continue to take a firm stand in cases involving crimes against women and assured that stringent action would be taken if the charges are proved. The investigation is ongoing.
