Doctor Brutally Beats, Verbally Abuses Patient on Hospital Bed, Viral Video Triggers Suspension and FIR
Shimla: Shocking footage from Indira Gandhi Medical College shows a doctor assaulting a patient mid-treatment, sparking outrage and official action
A disturbing video showing a doctor brutally assaulting a patient inside a government hospital in Shimla has gone viral on social media, prompting swift action from hospital authorities and the police.
The incident took place at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, where a patient identified as Arjun Panwar was admitted for an endoscopy procedure. According to officials, the patient experienced breathing difficulty before the procedure and moved to another ward, where he lay down on a bed to rest.
Moments later, the accused doctor reportedly reached the ward and began verbally abusing the patient. What followed was a violent physical assault, captured on camera. In the viral video, the doctor can be seen repeatedly punching the patient on his face and stomach while the patient lies on the hospital bed. The patient is also seen resisting and kicking the doctor during the altercation.
The video spread rapidly online, drawing widespread condemnation and anger. Hospital staff and bystanders rushed to the spot after the incident escalated, while the patient’s relatives demanded strict action against the doctor.
Hospital authorities confirmed that the accused doctor has been suspended with immediate effect. An internal inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the incident in detail.
Medical Superintendent Dr Rahul Rao stated that an FIR has been registered against the doctor based on the patient’s complaint. He added that the patient sustained serious injuries to his nose during the assault. Police have begun their investigation and further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry committee.
Officials also revealed that the patient hails from Nerva in Shimla district. Reports suggest that the confrontation may have escalated after the patient vomited, allegedly triggering an aggressive response from the doctor. However, authorities have stressed that no circumstances justify violence against a patient.
The incident has reignited concerns over patient safety, conduct within medical institutions, and accountability in government hospitals. Several people, including the patient’s family members, have alleged that similar incidents have occurred at the hospital in the past and have demanded systemic reforms.
As the investigation continues, the case has become a flashpoint for discussions around ethics in medical practice and the urgent need for stricter enforcement of patient protection norms.
