With Indian Railways planning a fare increase from December 26, 2025, senior citizens are looking forward to possible relief in the upcoming Union Budget 2026-27. Life may have largely returned to normal after the pandemic, but traveling remains costly for the elderly, whose incomes are often limited. For many, the reinstatement of railway ticket concessions could make a significant difference, especially for essential trips.

Railway Fare Hike Scheduled

From December 26, 2025, Indian Railways will increase ticket prices for journeys longer than 215 kilometers, expected to generate an additional ₹600 crore in revenue. General category passengers will see a rise of 1 paisa per kilometer, while non-AC and AC travelers in Mail and Express trains will pay 2 paisa extra per kilometer.

Previous Concessions for Senior Citizens

Before COVID-19, senior citizens enjoyed substantial discounts on train tickets. Men aged 60 and above received a 40% concession, while women aged 58 and above could get up to 50% off on major trains, including Mail, Express, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto. For example, a First AC ticket on a Rajdhani Express costing ₹4,000 would be priced around ₹2,000–₹2,300 for eligible elderly passengers, making long-distance travel much more affordable.

Suspension During the Pandemic

In 2020, the government temporarily suspended these concessions due to lower passenger numbers and financial constraints on the railways. Even after train services returned to normal levels, the discounts have yet to be reinstated, frustrating many senior citizens.

Hope Rests on Budget 2026

Many elderly passengers rely solely on pensions or savings after retirement. Rising travel costs have made essential journeys—whether for medical appointments, family visits, or religious trips—more difficult. Senior citizens now look to Budget 2026, which Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present on February 1, 2026, with hopes that the concessions will be restored. A positive decision could directly benefit millions of elderly travelers across the country.
