Pune Police Enforce Traffic Curbs, Diversions and No-Vehicle Zones for New Year’s Eve Celebrations
Pune, December 31, 2025: Anticipating large crowds on New Year’s Eve, the Pune traffic police have announced extensive traffic restrictions, diversions and pedestrian-only zones across key parts of the city on December 31. The temporary arrangements will be implemented from 5 pm on December 31 and will remain in force until crowds disperse in the early hours of January 1, 2026.
The traffic advisory has been issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Himmat Jadhav and primarily covers high-footfall areas such as Camp (Mahatma Gandhi Road) and Deccan (Fergusson College Road and Jungli Maharaj Road), which traditionally draw thousands of revellers during New Year celebrations. Police officials said the measures aim to ease congestion, ensure pedestrian safety and allow smoother movement of emergency vehicles.
Traffic Changes in Camp (MG Road Area)
Vehicular movement from the Y-Junction towards MG Road will be stopped at 15 August Chowk and diverted via Qureshi Masjid and Sujata Mastani Chowk. Traffic from the ISKCON Temple side towards Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Statue near Aurora Towers will not be allowed.
The Volga Chowk to Mohammad Rafi Chowk stretch will be closed, with vehicles diverted straight towards East Street Road via Indira Gandhi Chowk. The road between Indira Gandhi Chowk and Mahaveer Chowk will remain shut, and traffic will be rerouted through Lashkar Police Station Chowk. Movement from Sarbatwala Chowk to Mahaveer Chowk will be restricted, with vehicles diverted towards Taboot Street.
Traffic Arrangements in Deccan Area
In the Deccan zone, traffic coming from Khandojibaba Chowk on Karve Road or Kothrud side will be diverted through Law College Road, Prabhat Road and Alka Talkies Chowk. Depending on crowd conditions, vehicles moving from JM Road towards Khandojibaba Chowk, Goodluck Chowk and internal lanes leading to FC Road may be stopped at Jhansi Rani Chowk and diverted via Pune Municipal Corporation, Omkareshwar Temple and Shivaji Road.
No Vehicle Zones Announced
To prioritise pedestrian movement, a No Vehicle Zone will be enforced from 7 pm on December 31 to 5 am on January 1 on:
- Fergusson College Road from Goodluck Chowk to FC main gate
- Mahatma Gandhi Road from 15 August Chowk to Hotel Aurora Towers
Drunk Driving Checks Intensified
As part of a special drunk-and-drive enforcement drive, breath analyser tests will be conducted across the city from the night of December 31 until 5 am on January 1. Police have appealed to citizens to celebrate responsibly and avoid driving under the influence. Emergency vehicles, including ambulances, fire brigade units and police vehicles, will be permitted at all times.
Restrictions on Heavy Vehicles
Heavy vehicles such as trucks, dumpers, mixers, bulkers, JCBs, road rollers and multi-axle vehicles will be prohibited within city limits from midnight on December 31 until noon on January 1. Entry points where restrictions will be enforced include Theur Phata, Loni Kalbhor, Harris Bridge, Khadki, Bopkhel Phata, Vishrantwadi, Baner, Navale Bridge, Warje, Katraj Chowk, Kondhwa, Phursungi and Markal Bridge, among others. Vehicles providing essential emergency services are exempt.
The traffic department has urged citizens to cooperate with personnel on duty to ensure a safe, orderly and accident-free New Year celebration in Pune.
