Pune: Fire Breaks Out At Firecracker Shop in PCMC’s Kalewadi, Hospital Evacuated Patients; No Casualties Reported
Pimpri-Chinchwad, January 1, 2026: A fire broke out at a firecracker shop located at Tapkir Nagar Chowk in Kalewadi on Thursday evening at 6.22 PM, triggering an emergency response from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Fire Department. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.
According to fire officials, an alert was received at the main fire control room at around 6:22 pm. Considering the intensity of the fire and the likelihood of traffic congestion during evening hours, fire tenders from Thergaon and Rahatani fire stations were immediately dispatched to the spot.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the blaze to be severe, with a hospital located above the firecracker shop. As a precautionary measure, additional fire tenders were rushed from Pradhikaran, Nehrunagar, Chikhali, Bhosari, Moshi and Pimpri fire stations. A standby team from the Auto Cluster Election Strong Room and one fire engine from Pune Municipal Corporation were also deployed.
Fire personnel swiftly carried out rescue operations and safely evacuated all patients from the hospital located above the shop. Continuous firefighting operations, supported by multiple fire engines and uninterrupted water supply, helped bring the fire under control after nearly two hours.
Subsequently, a cooling operation was conducted by removing firecrackers and other inflammable materials from the shop using a JCB machine and dousing them with water. As an added safety measure, a large number of LPG cylinders stored at a gas agency adjacent to the shop were evacuated. Medical gas cylinders used by the hospital and stored at the rear of the building were also relocated to a safer place.
To ensure effective firefighting from the rear side of the shop, firefighters carried out a force entry by creating an opening in the back wall to facilitate water spraying and ventilation. Despite heavy traffic congestion in the area, timely assistance from the police helped ease movement, allowing fire engines to reach the site without delay.
For safety reasons, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) temporarily disconnected power supply in the affected area. Officials confirmed that the situation is now fully under control.
