Pune, January 13, 2026: Pune’s iconic Balgandharva Rangmandir has come under sharp criticism from the theatre community after Marathi actress Amruta Deshmukh publicly highlighted unhygienic conditions at the venue.

Deshmukh raised the issue on social media after performing at the auditorium on Sunday, stating that she has repeatedly witnessed poor maintenance during multiple productions.

According to Deshmukh, the washrooms near the artists’ rooms were “extremely dirty,” with the cleaning staff arriving barely minutes before showtime. She also pointed out the absence of basic facilities for performers, including mats outside washrooms. “It is shocking that such conditions persist in one of Pune’s oldest and most frequently used auditoriums,” she remarked.

In her strongly worded Marathi post, Deshmukh criticized the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), questioning its attitude towards both artists and audiences. She alleged that spectators too face inconvenience, citing complaints about rats, mosquitoes and unhygienic surroundings.

Calling Pune a cultural capital under such conditions was “ironic,” she said, urging the civic body to take corrective action.
