Highway travel in India is about to become completely cashless. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has confirmed that from April 1, 2026, toll plazas will no longer accept cash payments. Motorists must now pay tolls using FASTag or UPI, marking a major shift toward digital, efficient, and transparent highway travel.

Why Cash Payments Are Being Phased Out

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) introduced FASTag as an electronic toll payment system to reduce traffic congestion and waiting times at toll plazas. While cash payments were previously allowed, drivers who paid in cash were already subject to double toll charges as a penalty. For example, if a toll was ₹100, paying in cash without a FASTag would cost ₹200. This rule, in effect since 2021, encouraged adoption of FASTag and helped streamline toll collection.

Now, the government has taken the next step: cash will no longer be accepted at all. This is designed to make highway travel faster, reduce fuel wastage from repeated stops, and promote a fully digital tolling system.

Benefits of Using FASTag and Digital Payments

Time-saving: Vehicles no longer need to stop for cash, reducing congestion at toll plazas.

Fuel-efficient: Continuous movement reduces fuel consumption from repeated stops and starts.

Environment-friendly: Less idling means lower vehicle emissions.

Secure and transparent: Digital payments provide accurate records of all toll transactions.

Future-ready: This move prepares the way for the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system, where cars can pass tolls without stopping while sensors automatically deduct fees. MLFF is already being tested at 25 toll plazas across India.

How to Avoid Fines or Inconvenience

To ensure smooth travel and avoid penalties, drivers should follow these steps:

1. Check FASTag balance: Make sure your account is active and topped up before starting your journey.

2. Keep UPI ready: In case of FASTag malfunction, UPI apps like Google Pay or PhonePe can be used for immediate payment.

3. Affix FASTag correctly: Ensure the tag is properly attached to your windshield.

4. Replace damaged FASTags: A faulty tag can lead to inconvenience or fines.

5. Keep complaint channels handy: If you face incorrect deductions or overcharging, contact NHAI at 1033 or lodge complaints via CPGRAMS or the Umang app, providing toll plaza name, time, vehicle number, and evidence. NHAI offers 24/7 assistance to resolve issues promptly.

Why Drivers Should Act Now

Frequent highway travelers stand to save significant time and money by preparing in advance. FASTag not only avoids penalties but also reduces travel stress, promotes safer driving, and aligns with government efforts to digitalize infrastructure. Even those who travel occasionally should ensure they have a valid FASTag and backup UPI option, as cash payments will no longer be an option after April 1.
