Baramati, Maharashtra — Baramati was largely shut on Wednesday as residents mourned the sudden death of senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who died in a plane crash earlier in the day.

From early morning, shops, markets, and businesses in the town remained closed as traders observed a voluntary shutdown to honor Pawar. Many locals were seen in a state of shock and sadness as news of his death spread.

Baramati, known as a stronghold of Pawar’s politics, saw deep emotions among people from all walks of life, showing his influence beyond political boundaries.

Crowds Gather Near Hospital

A large number of NCP workers, supporters, and residents gathered near the Punyashlok Ahilyabai Holkar Government Medical College, where Pawar was taken. Police were deployed in strength to control the crowd and ensure peace.

Supporters raised slogans and expressed grief, while senior party leaders tried to calm the growing emotions among the crowd.

Business and Traffic Affected

Commercial activities, including markets, small businesses, and transport services, were largely inactive throughout the day. Traders said they chose to close their establishments as a mark of respect for Pawar’s long association with the town’s development.

Grief Spreads Beyond Baramati

Sadness over Pawar’s death was also seen in parts of Pune, where party members and supporters gathered at NCP offices to pay tribute. Political events across the region were muted as leaders and citizens remembered Pawar’s years of public service.
