Pune: Is PMC’s ‘JAGLYA Initiative’ Sleeping? Pashan Residents Announce June 14 Walk Against Unsafe Footpaths And Encroachments

Pune, June 12, 2026: Frustrated by years of neglected civic issues and hazardous pedestrian conditions, residents of Balaji Mandir Lane in Pashan have announced a peaceful citizens’ walk on June 14 to highlight what they describe as the complete failure of safe and walkable infrastructure in their neighbourhood.
In a letter addressed to the Mayor of Pune, residents have invited civic authorities to join the walk and witness firsthand the challenges faced by pedestrians on a daily basis. The initiative comes even as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) recently launched its ‘JAGLYA’ scheme, which requires ward officials to inspect footpaths regularly and remove obstructions.

The residents’ walk will begin at 8 am on Sunday, June 14, from Sirvi Medical Chowk, Balaji Mandir Lane, Pashan.

According to the residents, several critical issues continue to endanger public safety despite repeated complaints. These include exposed live electrical cables and open feeder pillars on walkways, widespread encroachments by hawkers and illegal shop extensions, broken footpaths, missing paver blocks, open manholes and uneven pedestrian surfaces.
Residents have also raised concerns over rampant illegal parking and chronic double-parking that frequently block access routes, creating serious risks during emergencies when ambulances and fire engines struggle to pass through the narrow lane.
Poor waste management and garbage accumulation on public walkways have further compounded the problem, making daily commuting difficult and unsafe for senior citizens, children and pedestrians.
The residents stated that their walk is intended to support the objectives of the JAGLYA initiative by drawing attention to specific local issues that require urgent intervention. They have urged PMC officials, ward authorities, the Roads Department, the Encroachment Removal Department, MSEDCL and local police to attend the event and take immediate corrective action.
“The purpose of this walk is to demonstrate the ground reality and ensure that safe, encroachment-free and accessible footpaths become a priority in our ward,” the residents said.
Copies of the letter have been sent to the Municipal Commissioner, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of the Aundh-Baner-Pashan Ward Office, Ward Officer, Executive Engineers of PMC and MSEDCL, and the Senior Police Inspector of Chaturshringi Police Station.
