Pune: Woman And One-Year-Old Son Killed After Container Truck Hits Motorcycle On Chakan-Nighoje Road
Pune, July 28: A tragic road accident on the Chakan-Nighoje road in Pune district claimed the lives of a 25-year-old woman and her one-year-old son, while her brother-in-law sustained serious injuries after a container truck allegedly rammed into their motorcycle on Sunday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Mangal Prahlad Chopalwad (25), a resident of Nanded, and her one-year-old son. The injured, Haridas Digambar Utalwad (40), a resident of Khalumbre in Khed taluka, is undergoing treatment for grievous injuries.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 7:30 am near Hotel Pancharatna on the Chakan-Nighoje road. Haridas, who had reportedly completed his night shift at a private company, had gone to pick up his sister-in-law and nephew, who had arrived from Nanded. The trio was travelling towards Khalumbre when the accident took place.
Police said the motorcycle was moving between two container trucks when the rider allegedly attempted to avoid a pothole, lost control, and came in the path of a truck following behind. The speeding container truck reportedly struck the motorcycle from the rear, throwing all three occupants onto the road.
Mangal and her toddler suffered fatal injuries and died on the spot, while Haridas sustained severe injuries after the truck’s wheel allegedly ran over him.
Following the accident, local residents caught the truck driver, identified as Sachin Yadav, a native of Uttar Pradesh, and allegedly assaulted him before police intervened and took him into custody.
The South Mahalunge Police have registered a case against the truck driver under Sections 281 (rash driving), 106(1) (causing death by negligence), 125(a), and 125(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Further investigation is underway.
