Pune, January 29, 2026: Pune has suffered a major political and administrative loss within the span of a single month, with the death of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar coming just weeks after the demise of veteran Congress leader Suresh Kalmadi. The passing of both leaders, who played decisive roles in shaping Pune’s urban and infrastructure growth over decades, has left a deep void in the city’s civic and political landscape.

Ajit Pawar died in a tragic plane crash in Baramati on Wednesday, barely three weeks after Suresh Kalmadi passed away on January 6 following a prolonged illness. A senior political analyst said, “The loss of two influential figures in such quick succession is unprecedented for the city. “Both leaders contributed immensely to Pune’s development in different phases. Losing them so close together is deeply painful.”

Despite belonging to rival political parties and often contesting control of the PMC, Pawar and Kalmadi shared a common focus on infrastructure-led development. Pawar, a senior NCP leader and long-time guardian minister of Pune, retained the portfolio across different governments and remained actively involved in civic planning until his final days.

Before 2007, Pawar had already established his reputation in Pimpri-Chinchwad by pushing large-scale road and infrastructure projects. After the NCP took control of the PMC, he ensured continuity in development while also accelerating new initiatives such as flyovers, suburban expansion, public transport strengthening and planned urban growth.

Kalmadi, who wielded significant influence during the Congress-led PMC tenure, played a key role in securing central funds for road widening and infrastructure upgrades during the Commonwealth Youth Games. He was instrumental in introducing the Bus Rapid Transit System and conceptualising projects like the Pune Metro and river improvement works for the Mula and Mutha.

Under Pawar’s leadership, Pune also saw renewed focus on water management, ring road development, industrial connectivity in areas like Hinjawadi and Chakan, and proposals for new municipal corporations to improve civic governance.

Political leaders cutting across party lines have described Ajit Pawar as a decisive administrator who prioritised the city’s interests.

With the passing of Ajit Pawar and Suresh Kalmadi, Pune bids farewell to two architects whose contrasting political journeys nevertheless converged in shaping the city’s modern identity.
