The incident in Bhosari has raised concerns over mental health distress, social media livestreaming, and bystander response.

A young man in Pune died by suicide on Thursday evening after livestreaming his emotional distress on Facebook from atop a water tank in a crowded vegetable market in Bhosari. The man, identified as Keshari Prasad Sahu, had been living alone after his wife and young daughter left home a few months ago, police said.

According to officials, Sahu climbed onto a water tank located on the second floor of the market area and went live on Facebook for just over a minute. In the video, he is seen crying uncontrollably and repeatedly saying, “I want to meet my wife, I want to live my life,” moments before jumping from the tank.

In another video recorded around six hours earlier, Sahu appeared deeply disturbed and said, “What are you thinking? What will I do. I don’t even know myself. But I will do something today, something that I don’t even know yet. Don’t take this as a joke. I’m in a very bad mood today. I will do something that no one has ever done before.”

Police said Sahu’s wife and daughter had left the house several months ago, and he was reportedly unable to cope with the emotional pain of separation. They suspect he may have consumed alcohol before taking the extreme step.

Upon receiving information about the incident, Bhosari police, the fire brigade, and an ambulance rushed to the spot. For nearly half an hour, police personnel and firefighters tried to persuade him to come down safely. However, he was not in a condition to listen. A large crowd gathered, and several bystanders recorded the incident on their mobile phones.

After the incident, police recovered a four-page suicide note posted by Sahu on his social media account. In the note, he repeatedly wrote, “I love my daughter very much,” and pleaded for a conversation with his wife. “I want to live with my wife and child. If my wife stays, it’s fine; otherwise, I will live for my child. I can’t bear this anymore. I miss you, Rani Divyanshi. Please talk to me once,” the note stated.

Sahu also alleged that certain individuals were responsible for separating him from his wife and wrote, “These people are responsible for my death. I want justice.” He further accused the police of not examining CCTV footage related to the matter.

Police said they are examining all aspects of the case based on the suicide note and the Facebook Live videos.
