Pune, February 7, 2026: Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has instructed civic officials to draft a comprehensive policy and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to regulate overhead cables across the city, citing growing safety risks to pedestrians and commuters.

The directive follows a recent inspection in Hadapsar, where a pedestrian was injured while walking on a footpath due to hanging overhead cables. According to the commissioner, cables are being installed indiscriminately in many areas, often dangling dangerously over roads and pavements.

ā€œThese cables have become a serious safety hazard. Accidents are occurring because of poorly managed overhead wiring. To address this issue, the civic body is planning to introduce a dedicated policy along with clear SOPs,ā€ Ram said.

Apart from safety concerns, the commissioner also pointed out that illegal overhead cables negatively impact the city’s visual appeal. ā€œThey spoil the skyline and make the city look cluttered. At present, there is no effective mechanism to control this problem,ā€ he added.

Ram has asked newly appointed city engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar to study how other major Indian cities and international urban centres manage overhead cabling. Best practices from these cities will be incorporated while drafting the new policy.

Pawaskar confirmed that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will soon finalise SOPs for overhead cables. ā€œAction has already been taken against illegal cables. Wherever they are found to be dangerous, they will be removed immediately,ā€ he said.
