In a rare and astonishing incident, a pigeon briefly snatched a gold chain worth Rs 1 lakh from a jewellery shop in Degana’s bullion market, causing panic among traders before the ornament was safely recovered.
According to local shopkeepers, artisans were working on jewellery inside a shop when the pigeon suddenly flew in, picked up a gold chain in its beak, and flew away.
“We followed the pigeon, which landed on the market roof. The chain got wrapped around its neck as the bird shook itself,” said one shopkeeper.
As news of the incident spread, many shopkeepers and passersby gathered outside. Some even climbed to the roof to catch the bird, but it flew away. Fortunately, the chain fell on the roof during the commotion and was retrieved safely by the trader.
Market representatives said security has been a growing concern due to rising gold prices. “While thefts are always feared, this is the first time a pigeon carried off gold. Traders now joke about installing grills on roofs and windows,” they added.
