Pune, February 9, 2026: In a significant move to upgrade railway infrastructure, Pune Railway Station will soon see the addition of six new platforms, along with the extension of four existing ones. The initiative is aimed at improving passenger convenience and managing increasing crowd pressure at one of the city’s busiest transport hubs.

The announcement was made by Prateek Goswami, General Manager of Central Railway, during a media interaction at the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) office in Pune on Saturday. He stated that the proposed expansion forms a key part of a long-term strategy to modernise the station and cater to the steady rise in passenger numbers.

Goswami explained that the enhanced platform capacity will streamline train operations and help regulate passenger movement, particularly during peak travel hours. Pune Railway Station currently handles a large volume of daily commuters, long-distance passengers, and seasonal rush, often resulting in congestion across platforms.

As part of broader railway development across Maharashtra, projects worth approximately ₹24,000 crore have been approved, with several initiatives already underway within the Pune division.

Divisional Railway Manager Rajesh Kumar Verma added that the planned infrastructure improvements will help minimise delays, improve circulation within the station, and provide a more comfortable travel experience for passengers.

Redevelopment work at Pune Railway Station will begin once part of the operational burden is shifted to other city stations. Infrastructure upgrades at Hadapsar and Khadki railway stations are nearing completion and are expected to become fully operational soon, allowing them to handle a share of Pune’s train traffic.

Railway officials noted that the redevelopment will bring modern amenities, improved passenger facilities, and better-designed circulation areas. Detailed planning is currently in progress, and further steps will be taken in a phased manner.

Kumbh Mela Preparations

Speaking on arrangements for the upcoming Kumbh Mela in Nashik, Verma said that a budget of ₹1,500 crore has been allocated for the event. He added that connectivity will be ensured from both Sainagar and Pune, with additional trains and routes planned to accommodate the expected surge in passengers.

Action Against Illegal Vendors

Responding to media queries on unauthorised hawkers, vendors, and the sale of illegal water bottles on railway premises, Verma said that action has already been taken against several offenders. He warned that strict measures will continue against those violating railway regulations and urged people to adhere to the law to avoid legal action.
