Decades before artificial intelligence became a global phenomenon, Malaysian tech entrepreneur Arsyan Ismail purchased the domain AI.com for just $100 (about Rs 300) in 1993, when he was only 10 years old. Using his mother’s credit card, Ismail picked the domain not for its future tech potential, but simply because the letters matched his own initials. At the time, most Malaysians had barely accessed the internet, and the domain remained largely unnoticed for years.

Fast forward to April 2025, AI.com has been sold to Kris Marszalek, CEO of Crypto.com, for $70 million (approximately Rs 634 crore) in a cryptocurrency transaction, making it the largest publicly disclosed domain sale in history. This surpasses the $49.7 million paid for CarInsurance.com in 2010 and highlights how digital assets can dramatically appreciate in value over time.

Two-letter domains are among the rarest digital properties, with only 676 possible combinations, most registered decades ago and rarely changing hands. Their simplicity, global recognition, and scarcity make them highly sought after. AI.com, in particular, became extremely valuable as artificial intelligence emerged as a central force in technology, branding, and business strategy.

Despite the domain’s eventual prominence, Ismail never developed it into a product or company. On occasion, it redirected to other AI-related websites, but it remained largely dormant, a strategy that preserved its long-term value according to industry experts. When offers reached as high as $100 million, Ismail opted for the $70 million deal, noting the importance of practical negotiations when dealing with billionaire buyers.

The domain made its public debut during Super Bowl LX, where Crypto.com introduced a new platform for “agentic AI” — personal AI agents capable of sending messages, trading stocks, and performing tasks across apps. Marszalek stressed that owning such a category-defining domain is crucial to avoid being “commoditised” in the highly competitive AI industry.

Ismail has been a quiet yet influential figure in Malaysia’s tech scene. From early social networking projects and roles at Nuffnang and Friendster to founding 1337 Tech, he has consistently demonstrated foresight in digital investments. His early adoption of Bitcoin and other digital assets further illustrates his ability to recognize long-term value in emerging technologies.

The sale of AI.com emphasizes how patience, timing, and strategic ownership can transform a simple online asset into one of the most valuable digital properties in history. It also highlights the growing importance of domain names as key assets in branding and the tech economy.
