Pune | February 12, 2026:

A late-night accident at SM Ghule Circle has once again exposed serious road safety concerns in the Mohammadwadi–NIBM Annexe area, after a speeding car rammed into iron arches erected for an upcoming local event, narrowly avoiding a major tragedy.

The incident occurred around 1 am on the SM Ghule Chowk–NIBM Annexe road, a stretch long known for overspeeding and weak traffic regulation. The high-speed vehicle crashed directly into the ornamental metal arches installed near the circle, causing the structure to shake violently and scatter debris across the road. No casualties were reported, but residents said the situation could have easily turned fatal.

Locals described the arches as a dangerous obstruction on an already risky road. Shopkeepers and residents who rushed to the spot said pedestrians and late-night commuters narrowly escaped serious injury. Community members have strongly criticised the installation, alleging it was done without police permission, safety approvals, or traffic planning.

Jaymala Dhankikar, Director of the NIBM Annexe Residents Forum, termed the structure illegal and hazardous. She said repeated warnings about unsafe installations and speeding vehicles in the area had been ignored by authorities.

Residents also recalled a fatal accident on the same stretch in October last year, when 27-year-old milk delivery worker Sunny Ambadas Misal was killed after a speeding car hit his two-wheeler near Raheja Premier society, triggering widespread outrage at the time.

Locals say SM Ghule Circle has become a chronic accident-prone zone, with long-pending demands for proper traffic planning, speed control measures, and strict enforcement. Civic activists have now demanded the immediate removal of unauthorised structures, installation of speed breakers, redesign of the junction, and stronger policing to prevent further loss of life.

The traffic police have initiated an inquiry into the incident, and investigations are underway to determine whether reckless driving and illegal installations were responsible for the crash.
