ARAI’s 20-acre facility at Takwe near Talegaon will help validate advanced driver-assistance systems under Indian road conditions

India has taken a major step towards safer and smarter mobility with the launch of the country’s first dedicated ADAS Test City near Pune. The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, has announced the opening of this pioneering facility at Takwe near Talegaon.

Spread across 20 acres and developed at an estimated cost of Rs 40 crore, the ADAS Test City has been designed as a pseudo city that replicates Indian road networks and traffic scenarios. The facility will serve as a controlled proving ground where automobile manufacturers and technology developers can test and validate Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) before they are deployed on public roads.

ADAS features, which are increasingly becoming common in modern vehicles, include technologies such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, pedestrian detection, traffic sign recognition, driver monitoring systems and automatic parking. These systems are aimed at improving driver awareness, preventing accidents and supporting future-ready automated driving.

ARAI officials said the Test City will enable safer, secure, repeatable and controlled testing of ADAS technologies, ensuring that these features perform effectively under real-world Indian driving conditions, which often involve dense traffic, unpredictable road behaviour and complex environments.

The facility is expected to bridge the gap between simulation-based testing, closed-track trials and actual public road deployment, strengthening India’s automotive safety ecosystem.

ARAI has also announced that an event titled the ADAS Show will take place on December 12 at the Test City. The event, organised by Aayera, will host government officials, industry experts and global automotive leaders. Live demonstrations of next-generation ADAS features will be showcased using ARAI’s advanced instrumentation and certification capabilities.

With major automotive OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers and technology innovators expected to participate, the ADAS Test City is being seen as a milestone project that will accelerate India’s progress towards smarter mobility, enhanced road safety and readiness for automated driving solutions.
