Pune, February 17, 2026: The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has proposed introducing an AI-supported online evaluation system for Class 10 (SSC) and Class 12 (HSC) examinations starting from the 2026–27 academic session. The proposal was submitted to the state government on January 7 and is currently awaiting approval.

A senior board official, requesting anonymity, confirmed that the plan is under review at the administrative level. A final decision will be taken after detailed discussions with senior authorities and policymakers.

At present, board examinations are conducted at nearly 15,000 centres across Maharashtra. After each paper, answer booklets are physically collected and transported to evaluation centres, where they are assessed by teachers and subsequently reviewed by moderators. Officials say the multi-step process involves extensive logistics, higher costs, and the possibility of human errors.

Under the proposed system, answer sheets would be scanned immediately after the examination at designated centres and uploaded to a secure central server. The digital copies would then be distributed subject-wise to authorised evaluators through secure logins. Teachers could assess answer sheets remotely using computers, tablets, or smartphones from approved locations.

Artificial Intelligence would function as a supervisory tool, helping flag discrepancies such as incorrect totals, missed answers, or inconsistent marking. The board believes this approach could enhance uniformity, transparency, and efficiency while reducing operational expenses.

The proposal follows similar steps announced by the Central Board of Secondary Education to integrate AI-assisted digital evaluation into its assessment system.

Education department officials clarified that the proposal is still under consideration. If approved, the initiative would mark a significant transition in Maharashtra’s examination assessment framework, bringing it in line with emerging digital evaluation practices nationwide.
