21-year-old BSc student Bonu Komali’s death under investigation; police examining phone data and CCTV footage

A 21-year-old science student and part-time YouTuber, Bonu Komali, was found dead at her rented apartment in Hyderabad’s Manikonda area on Monday, shortly after sending an emotional message to her mother in Kuwait.

According to police, Komali, a native of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, had been living alone in Hyderabad for nearly 11 months while pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at a private college. She also ran a YouTube channel where she posted lifestyle-related content.

In the early hours of Monday, she reportedly sent a text message to her mother, B Satya Varalakshmi, saying, “I love you mummy so much,” and asked her to take care of her younger brother. Her phone was later found switched off. When repeated calls went unanswered, her mother alerted a friend in Hyderabad, who visited the flat.

Friends found the apartment door locked from inside and informed the police. Officers broke open the door and discovered her unresponsive. The body was shifted to Osmania General Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Investigators said Komali had recently contacted her former boyfriend and asked him to meet her at the flat. CCTV footage from the building reportedly shows her standing at the door while the man leaves after a brief interaction. During the meeting, she is said to have requested reconciliation, but he declined and left.

Police sources said a handwritten note found at the scene reflected emotional distress. One entry reportedly read: “I’m scared to move on because what if he comes back? I know I should let go, I know he is not mine, I know he’s not even trying to stay. But a part of me still waits, still hopes, still imagines him choosing me one day. And that’s why moving on feels impossible, because what if the moment I finally walk away, he turns around and looks for me?”

Officials also revealed that Komali had allegedly attempted self-harm around six months ago, reportedly due to relationship-related issues. Her mother came to know about that incident later.

A case of suspicious death has been registered. Police are examining CCTV footage, mobile phone data, call records and social media activity as part of the investigation. Statements from friends and acquaintances are also being recorded.

Further details are awaited pending the post-mortem report and forensic findings.
