A new wave of “hi-tech” car thefts has triggered alarm among motorists in Pune, with vehicles reportedly disappearing within minutes — often without visible damage.

Unlike traditional break-ins, these thefts involve advanced electronic hacking methods. Police say criminals are using On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) devices and relay tools to bypass security systems in modern cars equipped with smart keys, GPS tracking and push-button start features.

With incidents on the rise, authorities are now facing the difficult task of tracking down organised gangs using sophisticated software tools.

How The Hi-Tech Theft Works

Modern vehicles are equipped with an OBD port, which authorised technicians use to diagnose faults in a car’s engine and electronic systems. However, thieves are exploiting this same port.

Using a laptop and specialised software, criminals connect an OBD device to the vehicle and scan its engine control unit. Once they gain digital access, they can clone or reprogram a key, effectively unlocking and starting the car without forcing entry.

In some cases, relay devices are also used to amplify signals from smart keys kept inside homes, tricking the car into believing the authorised key is nearby. After hacking into the system, thieves can disable sensors and GPS tracking, making the vehicle extremely difficult to trace.

Experts warn that once access to the software is achieved, the theft can be completed in just a few minutes.

• Always park in authorised parking spaces equipped with CCTV surveillance.
• Use additional physical deterrents such as steering locks or gear locks instead of relying only on electronic locking systems.
• Double-check that all doors and windows are securely closed before leaving the vehicle.
• Engage the handbrake properly. On slopes, park in first gear when facing downhill and reverse gear when facing uphill.

Experts also advise restricting access to the car’s OBD port and ensuring servicing is carried out only at authorised centres.
