Pune | March 4, 2026 – The long-awaited Metro connectivity to Pune’s airport has taken a significant step forward, with a practical route now finalised to link the city’s Metro network directly to Pune International Airport.

Union Minister of State and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol on Tuesday announced that after evaluating six different route options, authorities have identified a feasible alignment for the airport Metro corridor. He stated that the project will move ahead shortly.

Currently, the airport at Lohegaon is accessible only by road, leading to frequent traffic congestion, particularly along Nagar Road and nearby areas. The existing Metro line runs through Nagar Road, with Ramwadi being the closest operational station to the airport. However, passengers must rely on road transport for the last stretch.

With passenger numbers steadily increasing over the past decade, direct Metro access to the airport has been a persistent demand from residents and frequent flyers.

During the review meeting, Mohol also confirmed that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared for a proposed Khadakwasla–Hinjewadi Metro corridor. The proposed alignment has sparked discussion, as earlier proposals had mentioned a Chandani Chowk–Hinjewadi link.

Commuter groups have been advocating for a Katraj–Hinjewadi Metro route, arguing that it would significantly reduce congestion on the Mumbai–Bengaluru National Highway (NH-48), especially between Katraj, Wakad and Hinjewadi. The western bypass corridor witnesses heavy daily traffic due to the presence of IT parks, industrial zones and rapidly expanding residential areas.

Residents say that a direct Metro connection to Hinjewadi’s IT hub would drastically cut travel time and reduce reliance on private vehicles, particularly during peak hours.

Mohol also reviewed progress on the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro project being implemented by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority. The corridor is reported to be 94 per cent complete, with 13 out of 23 stations expected to be ready by the end of April.

In addition, he stated that work on the Vanaz–Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi–Wagholi Metro extensions will commence soon.

Beyond Metro expansion, the meeting covered 16 major infrastructure initiatives, including widening and beautification of airport approach roads, river rejuvenation under the National River Conservation Plan, and the final phase of the city’s equal water supply scheme.

Amid concerns over rising pollution levels, Mohol directed officials to implement immediate mitigation measures and remove encroachments from footpaths.

The minister also assessed the progress of the Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College building and hostel project, originally conceptualised during his tenure in the Pune Municipal Corporation.

The review meeting, held at the Government Rest House, was attended by senior officials including civic commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, PMRDA commissioner Yogesh Mhase, Maha Metro executive director Shravan Hardikar and airport director Santosh Dhoke.

Mohol said that with support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and under the leadership of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, development projects in Pune are being fast-tracked and will be completed within set timelines.
