Pune is set for a significant boost in urban connectivity as the much-awaited Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar metro line is expected to begin operations in April. At the same time, authorities have started planning a new 25-kilometre metro corridor connecting Hinjewadi to Khadakwasla to address persistent traffic congestion in the city’s major IT hub and nearby areas.

During a city development review meeting on Tuesday, Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol directed officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report for the Khadakwasla–Hinjewadi metro corridor, marking the beginning of formal planning for the proposed route. He also stated that the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar metro project, being implemented by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), is about 94 percent complete. Authorities are aiming to make 13 of the total 23 stations operational by the end of April.

Hinjewadi has long struggled with severe traffic congestion, monsoon flooding, and road safety concerns. Businesses, employees, and local residents have repeatedly demanded an efficient public transport system as the area’s rapid growth continues to put pressure on existing roads. Delays in metro construction had left the region dependent on overcrowded roads despite earlier proposals to widen them.

Metro expansion is also being planned in other parts of the city. Mohol announced that work on the Vanaj–Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi–Wagholi metro extensions will begin soon. Authorities have also reviewed six possible routes to connect the metro network with Pune International Airport, and feasible alignments have now been identified for future planning.

Along with metro projects, several road infrastructure improvements are underway. These include widening and beautification works on routes from Yerawada Jail and Kalyani Nagar towards Pune International Airport. Land acquisition processes for these projects will begin where required. Plans are also being considered for an alternative road to support the expansion of the airport runway.

Mayor Manjusha Nagpure highlighted the need for strong coordination between central and local agencies for Pune’s long-term development. She said discussions during the review meeting covered several key projects, including improving access roads to Pune Airport, managing road diversions due to runway expansion, sewage treatment plant development, river rejuvenation work, 24-hour water supply initiatives, dust pollution control measures, and removal of encroachments.

The meeting also reviewed several cultural and heritage development projects across the city. These include proposed monuments at Chandni Chowk and Deccan Gymkhana, renovation of Balgandharva Rangmandir, and progress on memorials dedicated to Yashwantrao Chavan and Lahuji Vastad Salve. Officials also discussed ongoing construction work at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and its hostel facility.
