Authorities say India has adequate fuel stocks and supply networks are functioning normally despite tensions in West Asia.

The Central government and state-run oil marketing companies have dismissed rumours circulating on social media about a shortage of petrol and diesel in India, urging citizens not to panic or rush to fuel stations.

Officials clarified that fuel supplies across the country remain normal and that there is no disruption in the distribution network.

State-owned oil companies said messages claiming a shortage of petrol and diesel are misleading. They emphasised that India currently has sufficient fuel reserves and that supply chains are operating without interruption.

In a statement, the oil marketing companies said India has adequate stocks of petrol, diesel and LPG and that the distribution system is functioning normally across the country. Citizens have been advised not to crowd petrol pumps and to rely only on official sources for information.

The clarification comes after rumours began spreading online about possible fuel shortages amid rising tensions in West Asia. Concerns intensified after developments linked to the conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States, as well as reports about disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.

However, government officials said there is no immediate cause for concern regarding domestic fuel availability.

According to officials familiar with the situation, India currently has sufficient crude oil and petroleum product reserves. The country is estimated to have about 25 days of crude oil stocks and around 25 days of petrol and diesel reserves, providing roughly 50 days of overall fuel availability, with supplies being replenished regularly.

Oil companies reiterated that India’s fuel supply system is robust and capable of maintaining uninterrupted availability across the country.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also reassured the public that there is no shortage of energy in the country. He said the government remains committed to ensuring continuous availability of affordable and sustainable fuel for consumers.

Authorities have urged people not to believe unverified social media posts and to avoid unnecessary panic buying at petrol pumps. Officials emphasised that adequate monitoring mechanisms are in place to track fuel supply and stock levels across the country.
