21-Year-Old ‘Auctioned’, Forced into Multiple Marriages: Police Expose Pune Marriage Racket After Suicide Attempt
Police investigation has revealed a disturbing racket in which a young woman was allegedly forced into multiple marriages for money by a network operating from Pune.
A shocking case of exploitation has come to light in Maharashtra after a 21-year-old woman allegedly forced into multiple marriages attempted suicide. Police investigation has revealed that the woman alleged being repeatedly married off to different men in exchange for money by a suspected racket operating from Pune.
According to the complaint, the woman, a resident of Latur district, was first married two years ago in Beed. However, she later returned to her parental home following disputes with her husband over an alleged extramarital relationship. After the death of her grandparents, she was left without strong family support, which allegedly made her vulnerable to exploitation.
How The Racket Allegedly Operated
The victim told police that a woman from her neighbourhood approached her with a promise of arranging a second marriage. She was later taken to Pune and introduced to a woman, who allegedly acted as an agent claiming she could find a suitable groom.
Police said the woman was then repeatedly married off to different men after money was collected from them. The first forced marriage was reportedly arranged in Pune’s Katraj area after ₹5 lakh was taken from a man. The victim stayed there for about 10 days before being taken away again.
She was then allegedly taken to Kurukshetra and married to another man after ₹4.5 lakh was collected. Within days, she was again moved and married to a third man from Kanadi Budruk after a similar payment was reportedly taken. The third marriage was arranged on March 1, 2026.
Suicide Attempt After Threat Of Fourth Marriage
The situation reportedly worsened when the husband of the alleged agent contacted the woman again and claimed that another “better match” had been found, suggesting that a fourth marriage would be arranged for her.
Distressed by repeated exploitation and mental harassment, the woman consumed poison in an apparent suicide attempt. She is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, where she later recorded her statement to police.
Case Registered, Probe Underway
Based on the woman’s complaint, police have registered a case against the alleged agent, her husband, and another woman identified from Tuljapur, along with other suspected members of the racket.
Investigators are now working to identify additional accused and determine whether more women may have been exploited in a similar manner.
