Pune, March 10, 2026: Gas-based crematorium facilities operated by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have been temporarily shut since March 5 due to a shortage in gas supply, civic officials said.

The closure follows a directive issued on March 5 by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India, which instructed authorities to prioritise the available supply of propane and butane across the country for domestic LPG needs. In response to this order, PMC decided to suspend operations at gas-powered crematorium units until further notice.

However, two gas-based cremation units operated by Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) at the Bibwewadi Crematorium will continue functioning. These facilities have been reserved mainly for residents from the Dhankawadi and Katraj areas.

To ensure funeral services continue without disruption, the civic body has kept electric crematoriums and facilities equipped with Air Pollution Control (APC) systems operational. At the Vaikunth Crematorium, three gas-based units have been closed for now, while five electric cremation units remain functional.

The municipal administration has advised citizens to make use of electric crematoriums located closer to their neighbourhoods in order to reduce the burden on Vaikunth crematorium.

Electric cremation facilities are currently available at several locations across Pune, including:

  • Yerwada Crematorium near Gunjan Chowk on Nagar Road
  • Kharadi Crematorium in Kharadi village
  • Kailash Crematorium near SSPMS Ground
  • Kothrud Crematorium in Guruganesh Nagar
  • Baner Crematorium on the Aundh–Baner Link Road
  • Ganganagar Crematorium

PMC officials have urged residents to cooperate with the temporary arrangement and use the available electric cremation facilities while the gas supply issue remains unresolved.
