Pune: PMC Budget Allocates ₹1,500 Crore For Roads, Flyovers And Missing Links; Two Major Tunnels Planned
Pune, March 11, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Monday presented its 2026 budget, announcing major investments in road infrastructure and urban mobility. The civic body has proposed ₹1,505 crore for road development, including new roads, missing links, flyovers and grade separators across the city and newly merged villages.
According to the budget proposal, the civic administration plans to develop 65 km of new roads and complete pending road works, including land acquisition, footpaths and leveling of utility chamber covers. In addition, at least one main road and footpath in each merged village will be developed within a year.
PMC has also proposed the establishment of an Urban Mobility Cell to improve traffic planning and coordination across the city.
Record Allocation for Road Department
The budget suggests ₹1,505 crore as capital expenditure and ₹361 crore as revenue expenditure, taking the total allocation for the road department to ₹1,866 crore. Officials said the amount is ₹500 crore higher than last year and the highest allocation so far.
Flyovers, Grade Separators and Tunnels
Several infrastructure projects including flyovers, grade separators and underpasses have been proposed across Pune, with ₹740 crore allocated for these works.
Two major tunnel projects — Pashan–Sutaradara Tunnel and Taljai–Hingne Tunnel — have also been included in the financial plan, with the civic body aiming to begin work on them this year.
Ongoing Projects
Key infrastructure projects currently underway include:
- Suncity–Karvenagar Bridge, expected to be completed by August 2026.
- Grade separator and flyover at Shastrinagar Chowk and Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk, targeted for completion by March 2027.
Proposed Major Projects
The PMC has also proposed several new infrastructure works, including:
- A grade separator at Mahatma Phule Chowk in Mundhwa.
- A flyover connecting the Mumbai–Pune road near the Sakhar Sankul area.
- A new flyover and grade separator between Chandani Chowk and Bhugaon.
- A flyover connecting Shivne to Nanded City.
- A flyover along the metro corridor between Vanaz and Chandani Chowk.
- Two railway underpasses across the Mumbai–Pune rail line in the Khadki area.
River Rejuvenation Project
Work on the Mula–Mutha River rejuvenation project along a 44-km stretch is progressing rapidly.
- The 3.7-km stretch from Sangamwadi to Bund Garden is targeted for completion before the monsoon.
- The 5.3-km phase from Bund Garden to Mundhwa is about 45% complete and is expected to finish by December 2026.
Smart Parking and Structural Audit
To address parking challenges, PMC has initiated a GIS-based parking reservation mapping system, which will allow citizens to view available parking spaces digitally.
Additionally, the civic body has carried out structural audits of 99 major flyovers, subways and bridges in the city and has started repair work where necessary.
Metro and Transport Connectivity
The budget also allocates ₹5 crore for developing parking facilities at amenity spaces along the Pune Metro corridor.
The widening of the railway underpass near Khadki railway station is expected to ease traffic on Ganeshkhind Road and the old Mumbai–Pune highway.
Riverfront Road and Pedestrian Infrastructure
A 30-metre-wide riverfront road from the RTO area to Mundhwa has also been proposed to improve connectivity. In addition, new pedestrian underpasses will be built on Ahmednagar Road and Solapur Road to enhance pedestrian safety.
