Indian Railways to Launch 260 Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains for Faster, Comfortable Overnight Journeys
Indian Railways is set to revolutionize long-distance travel with the introduction of a vast network of Vande Bharat sleeper trains. Approximately 260 new services are being planned to operate in phases, offering passengers faster, safer, and more comfortable overnight journeys across the country.
Designed specifically for nighttime travel, these trains aim to significantly cut travel time on major routes while providing modern amenities that enhance passenger comfort. Officials say the sleeper version of the Vande Bharat trains will bring the same advanced features and convenience already associated with the daytime Vande Bharat services to long-distance travelers.
The development of these trains is a joint effort between BEML and the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai. While the complete rollout of all 260 services will occur gradually, the first batch of trains is expected to be operational by the end of 2026, with 12 trains ready for service initially.
Ticketing and Fare System
Indian Railways has revamped the booking system for these sleeper trains, focusing on passenger convenience and a simplified experience. Key changes include:
No waiting list or RAC tickets: All passengers will receive confirmed seats, eliminating uncertainty and improving travel planning.
Digital-first booking: Tickets will be available exclusively through online platforms, ensuring a smooth and modern reservation process.
Distance-based fare: Pricing depends on the distance traveled. For instance, a journey of around 400 kilometers in 3AC will cost approximately ₹960, with fares varying proportionally for longer or shorter trips.
Priority for senior citizens: Men above 60 years and women above 45 years will be given preference for lower berths, making overnight travel more comfortable for older passengers.
Speed, Safety, and Passenger Amenities
The Vande Bharat sleeper trains are set to surpass even premium trains like the Rajdhani in terms of speed, safety, and comfort. Highlights include:
High-speed travel: These trains can operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h, significantly reducing travel time on long-distance routes.
Advanced safety features: Each coach is equipped with the Kavach train protection system and fire-resistant doors to prevent accidents and improve passenger security.
Health-conscious design: UV-C lighting systems have been installed to purify the air inside coaches, minimizing germs and promoting a cleaner environment.
Accessibility and comfort: Special toilets for persons with disabilities and easier steps to reach upper berths have been provided, ensuring convenience for all passengers.
Transforming Long-Distance Travel
With these new Vande Bharat sleeper services, Indian Railways envisions a new era of overnight rail travel, combining speed, safety, and modern facilities. The trains aim to make long-distance journeys not just faster, but more comfortable and hassle-free, particularly for senior citizens and travelers seeking a reliable overnight option.
Railway officials are optimistic that these trains will set a benchmark in passenger experience, bringing overnight rail travel in India closer to global standards while making it more accessible, efficient, and secure for millions of travelers.
