New Delhi, March 16, 2026: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has made biometric Aadhaar authentication (e-KYC) mandatory for all domestic LPG consumers across India, as authorities attempt to streamline distribution amid a supply shortage.

In an official advisory, the ministry said consumers must complete the e-KYC verification process to continue receiving LPG cylinder supplies. The verification can be carried out from home using the mobile application of the respective Oil Marketing Company along with the Aadhaar FaceRD app.

Consumers facing difficulties have been advised to contact their LPG distributor or use the toll-free helpline numbers provided by the government for assistance.

The directive comes at a time when LPG supplies are under pressure across several cities in India, largely due to disruptions in global gas shipments following tensions in West Asia. The conflict involving the Iran, Israel and the United States has affected shipping routes through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a key corridor for energy supplies.

As a result, LPG prices have increased in major cities. In New Delhi, the price of a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder has risen to ₹913, up from ₹853 earlier, while the price of a 19-kg commercial cylinder has increased by ₹115 to ₹1,884.50.

The shortage has triggered panic buying and hoarding in several areas. Authorities have reported cases of illegal stockpiling and black-market sales of LPG cylinders.

In Kengeri in Bengaluru, police arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly hoarding cylinders of different brands and selling them at inflated prices. Meanwhile, in Delhi, police have suspended routine leave and deployed personnel around the clock at LPG depots to prevent hoarding and black-marketing.

To manage the situation, the Government of Delhi has capped the daily regulated supply of commercial LPG cylinders at 20 percent of the city’s average daily consumption

Officials said the new e-KYC requirement is intended to ensure transparent distribution, prevent misuse of LPG connections, and prioritise genuine domestic consumers during the ongoing supply disruption.
