Rent agreements are meant to protect both tenants and landlords, but for one Bengaluru professional, the end of her lease has turned into a financial headache. A woman who had rented a 3BHK apartment in Yeshwanthpur alleges that her landlords returned just a fraction of her security deposit, sparking widespread discussions about tenant rights in the city.

The tenant, who had initially paid Rs 70,000 as a security deposit, claims that she received only Rs 18,000 after vacating the apartment. According to her, the landlords deducted one month’s rent and additional charges for painting and repairs, leaving her shocked at the settlement. She argues that many of these costs should not have been her responsibility, particularly since she had informed the landlord about the issues in the house beforehand and was told to address them herself.

The dispute reportedly arose after the landlords decided to sell the property, prompting the tenant to vacate. She asserts that she moved out without any conflict, yet the financial reconciliation left her frustrated. Adding to her woes, she alleges that the landlord has blocked her on WhatsApp, cutting off direct communication and prompting her to consider sending a legal notice. She has stated that she will escalate the matter to court if the issue is not resolved within 15 days.

Once shared online, her story quickly went viral, drawing attention from social media users who recounted similar experiences. One user commented, “Even I gave 75k, got only 30k in return,” reflecting a broader pattern of disputes over security deposits. Others criticised Bengaluru’s rental system, describing it as “rotten to the core,” and suggested the idea of an app where tenants could rate landlords based on verified experiences. Since her account and the accompanying video went viral, it has sparked widespread discussion online, though it remains unclear what exactly was mentioned in the rental agreement.
