Pune Metro Expansion Plan: Swargate–Katraj Line May Extend To Khed Shivapur Toll Plaza And Ring Road
Pune, March 20, 2026: In a significant step towards improving urban mobility, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) City Improvement Committee has approved a proposal to extend the Swargate–Katraj Metro further up to Shivapur Toll Plaza and the proposed ring road. The proposal has now been forwarded to the general body for final approval.
Speaking on the development, committee chairperson Smita Vaste said the extension is crucial considering the rapid urbanisation in South Pune, particularly in Katraj, Shivapur, and areas along the upcoming ring road.
“The growing population and rising traffic congestion in these areas make it essential to expand the metro network. This project will provide citizens with faster, safer, and eco-friendly public transport,” she stated.
She further added that seamless connectivity between the metro corridor and the proposed ring road would help balance traffic distribution across the city and significantly boost future urban planning efforts.
The proposed extension is expected to benefit residents in and around Katraj, Shivapur, and newly developing zones along the ring road by reducing dependence on private vehicles and easing traffic congestion.
Officials said the project will play a vital role in the city’s overall development. The committee has formally recommended the proposal to the PMC general body for final clearance.
