Pune, March 24, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has unveiled an environment-focused budget for 2026–27, outlining a series of ambitious initiatives aimed at making the city cleaner, greener and more sustainable.

Presented by Standing Committee Chairman Shrinath Bhimale, the budget introduces a dedicated allocation for environmental conservation for the first time, with a strong emphasis on modern technology and citizen participation.

A key highlight of the proposal is the plan to establish what officials describe as India’s first advanced air pollution control system under a public-private partnership model. The system will continuously monitor air quality through the Air Quality Index (AQI) and enable quicker action to control pollution levels.

The civic body has also proposed transforming Pune into a “Lake City.” In the first phase, lakes in areas such as Pashan, Model Colony and Jambhulwadi will be developed and beautified. The project aims to enhance biodiversity, promote environmental conservation and create accessible public spaces. In later phases, similar work will be extended to areas including Katraj, Dhayari and Lohegaon.

To boost public involvement, the PMC plans to organise river conservation festivals, awareness campaigns and training programmes. In collaboration with the state forest department, a joint forest management initiative will also be implemented to protect city hills, including measures like plantation drives, water conservation and improved security.

As part of its green agenda, the civic body has set a target of planting 50 lakh trees within a year with public participation. Additionally, under the urban water conservation scheme, steps will be taken in areas such as Vetal Tekdi, Parvati, Warje, Hadapsar and Dhanori to improve water storage and recharge groundwater levels.

Officials said these initiatives are expected to improve air quality, reduce heat levels, enhance biodiversity and address water scarcity, moving Pune closer to becoming a more sustainable and eco-friendly city.
