Pune, March 27, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced a plan to build 100 additional public toilets for women across the city, even as concerns persist over the upkeep of existing facilities.

The proposal was revealed earlier this week by standing committee chairman Shreenath Bhimale, who highlighted the growing demand for sanitation infrastructure due to the city’s expanding population.

He stated that future contracts would include provisions to ensure long-term maintenance, addressing issues seen in previous projects.

In recent years, the civic body had installed so-called “smart toilets” at prominent locations such as Jangali Maharaj Road and Fergusson College Road. However, many of these facilities are currently non-operational, raising questions about the effectiveness of earlier initiatives.

Civic activist Vivek Velankar criticised the move, arguing that the administration should prioritise repairing and maintaining existing toilets before announcing new projects. He noted that similar proposals have been made in the past, including plans for advanced, air-conditioned toilets, which were eventually shelved following public opposition.
