Pune, March 28, 2026: The Pune district authorities have ordered the immediate suspension of fuel sales and supply at a petrol pump in the Pune Cantonment area after it was found to have spread unverified information about fuel shortages, triggering panic among citizens.
The action was taken against Highway Petroleum Centre located at Pulgate, following directives issued by the concerned oil company. Officials stated that the petrol pump circulated baseless rumours regarding shortages of petrol and diesel, which falls under “major irregularity” as per the Marketing Discipline Guidelines (MDG) 2024.

According to authorities, such misinformation had the potential to create unnecessary panic, leading to crowding and confusion at other fuel stations, and possibly affecting law and order. At a time when oil marketing companies have been assuring uninterrupted fuel supply, the spread of false information was viewed as a serious violation of dealership norms.

The petrol pump operator has been directed to submit a written explanation within 24 hours. Officials have warned that failure to provide a satisfactory response could lead to cancellation of the dealership and further strict action.
