Baramati, April 4, 2026: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party president Sunetra Pawar is set to file her nomination on April 6 for the upcoming Baramati Assembly bypoll in Pune district, according to party sources.

The by-election, scheduled for April 23, was necessitated following the death of her husband, Ajit Pawar, who passed away in a plane crash earlier this year. He had represented Baramati multiple times and was a prominent political figure in the region.

Sources indicated that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde are likely to be present during the nomination process, which will follow a public gathering in Baramati.

Sunetra Pawar, currently a member of the Rajya Sabha, assumed office as Deputy Chief Minister in January and was later unanimously chosen to lead the NCP in February.

In previous elections, Ajit Pawar had secured decisive victories in the Baramati constituency, maintaining a strong electoral base. While the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) has announced it will not contest the bypoll, its ally, the Indian National Congress, has indicated that the seat will not go uncontested.

Apart from Baramati, a bypoll will also be held in the Rahuri constituency in Ahilyanagar district on the same day, following the demise of BJP MLA Shivaji Kardile.
