Pune, April 4, 2026: Pune police have registered a case against a school teacher and a government clerk for allegedly failing to carry out their responsibilities during the ongoing voter list revision exercise in Maharashtra.

The accused have been identified as Sheikh Shahnawaz Yunus, a teacher at Anglo Urdu Boys High School, and Pratap Patil, who works with the Public Works Department (Electrical). The complaint was filed by Revenue Assistant Anil Vilas Gaikwad at the Bundgarden Police Station.

According to officials, the incident took place between January 2, 2026, and recent days, when both individuals were appointed as Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for the voter verification process in the 214 Cantonment Assembly constituency. Their role involved conducting door-to-door checks to confirm the details and residence of registered voters.

However, authorities allege that despite multiple notices, both individuals failed to report for duty and did not respond to official communications. Their absence is said to have disrupted and delayed the verification process.

Based on the complaint, a case has been registered under provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 for neglect of election-related duties. The investigation is currently being handled by Police Sub-Inspector Dheeraj Gupta.

The voter list revision drive, part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) programme, is being conducted across several states, including Maharashtra. Meanwhile, concerns are being raised over the increasing workload on government staff and teachers, who are also expected to assist in upcoming census-related activities.
