Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link 99% Complete; India’s Tallest Cable-Stayed Bridge Set For May Launch

Rs 6,695 crore project 99% ready, expected to cut travel time by 25 minutes and improve safety for daily commuters

The much-awaited Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link project is nearing completion, with 99 per cent of the work finished and final touches currently underway. Officials have indicated that the project is likely to be opened to the public around May 2026, marking a major milestone in Maharashtra’s infrastructure development.

Project Near Completion

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) confirmed that construction work is almost complete. The crucial cable-stayed bridge, built by Afcons Infrastructure, has been structurally finished, while bitumen laying work is currently in progress.

Engineers will soon conduct load-bearing tests to ensure the bridge’s strength, stability, and safety before it is opened for traffic.

India’s Tallest Cable-Stayed Bridge

A key highlight of the project is the country’s tallest road cable-stayed bridge. The structure features pylons rising up to 182 metres, making it taller than the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

The bridge, part of Package II, spans around 650 metres and stands as a major engineering achievement in India’s road infrastructure.

The Missing Link project includes multiple components designed to enhance connectivity between Mumbai and Pune:

• Cable-stayed bridge length: 650 metres
• Tallest pylon height: 182 metres
• Viaduct I length: 850 metres
• Approach roads: 10.2 km
• Total project cost: Rs 6,695 crore

In addition, the project includes long tunnels and widened expressway sections to support smoother traffic flow.

Tunnel And Road Infrastructure

The project also features significant tunnel construction:

• Tunnel I length: 1.68 km
• Tunnel II length: 8.87 km
• Tunnel width: 23.50 metres
• Expressway widening: 5.86 km

These upgrades are aimed at improving overall connectivity and reducing congestion on one of India’s busiest routes.

Once operational, the Missing Link will significantly improve travel between Mumbai and Pune. The project is expected to:

• Reduce distance by approximately 6 km
• Cut travel time by nearly 25 minutes
• Lower fuel consumption and emissions
• Provide safer and smoother travel

Over 1.5 lakh commuters are expected to benefit from the improved route daily.

Final Testing Before Launch

Officials have emphasised that safety checks, including load testing of the bridge, will be completed before the inauguration. Only after successful testing will the route be opened to the public.
