Pune: Cab and Auto Drivers Warn Of Indefinite Hunger Strike If Demands Remain Unresolved
Mumbai, April 15, 2026: A crucial meeting between cab and auto-rickshaw driver representatives and state transport authorities was held in Mumbai, where drivers warned of launching an indefinite hunger strike if their pending demands are not addressed.
Dr Keshav Kshirsagar said, “The meeting was conducted with Rajesh Narvekar, the State Transport Commissioner, and Assistant Transport Commissioner Bharat Kalaskar. It was organised under the banner of the Indian Gig Workers Forum.”
During the discussion, cab drivers who had undertaken a protest march from Pune to Mumbai strongly presented their key demands. These included the immediate implementation of government-approved fares for app-based cab services and a ban on illegal bike taxi operations. Several other issues affecting drivers’ earnings were also raised in detail.
Commissioner Narvekar assured that a meeting with representatives of app-based companies has been scheduled for April 16, 2026. He stated that efforts would be made at the government level to find a positive resolution to the key concerns.
Driver representatives, however, maintained a firm stance, stating that their next course of action would depend on the outcome of the upcoming meeting. They indicated that if a satisfactory solution is reached, the agitation may be withdrawn.
However, they issued a clear warning that if their demands are not met, cab drivers who marched from Pune will begin an indefinite hunger strike at Azad Maidan starting April 18, 2026.
The association reiterated that their struggle for fair fares and drivers’ rights will continue until concrete action is taken.
