Pune IT Firm Faces Scrutiny After Minister Seeks Police Inquiry Into Alleged Use of Office Rest Rooms for Religious Activities
Concerns emerging from Pune’s Hinjawadi IT hub have led Maharashtra Minister of State for Transport Madhuri Misal to request a formal police inquiry into alleged inappropriate use of workplace rest facilities at a multinational technology company.
The minister, in a letter sent to the Pune Police Commissioner, said she had received multiple complaints suggesting that certain office rest or retiring rooms were being used in ways that may go beyond their intended purpose. The issue, she noted, may be affecting access for employees and raising questions about workplace discipline and equal facility usage.
At the same time, she stressed that the allegations remain unverified and must be properly examined before any conclusions are drawn.
A key portion of her letter stated, “According to information received by me through various sources, certain complaints have been received regarding the usage of male resting rooms at the office of a renowned multinational company. It is alleged that a specific group regularly utilises these rooms for religious rituals, and it has also come to light that access for other employees is restricted during such times,”
She further added in the same communication, “It appears that this situation is adversely impacting the equitable utilisation of workplace facilities, employees’ rights, and organisational discipline. While the aforementioned information has not yet been officially verified, it is imperative to ascertain its veracity,”
Highlighting the need for a careful and employee-sensitive approach, she also wrote, “Specifically, it is essential to engage in voluntary and confidential counselling/dialogue with female employees to verify whether they are experiencing any form of pressure, harassment, or inconvenience. As this matter is sensitive in nature, you are requested to take serious cognisance of this issue and initiate the necessary action immediately,”
Misal has urged the police to treat the matter seriously and conduct a detailed fact-finding exercise. She has also requested confidential interaction with women employees to ensure they are not facing any coercion, discomfort, or harassment related to the situation.
The letter emphasizes that while the claims are yet to be officially confirmed, they warrant immediate attention due to their potential impact on workplace harmony and employee rights.
