PCMC Fines 12 Housing Societies for Faulty Sewage Treatment, Warns of Strict Action
Pune, April 25, 2026: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has taken action against 12 housing societies for failing to comply with environmental norms related to sewage treatment, imposing a total penalty of ₹70,000.
The crackdown followed inspections of 21 privately operated sewage treatment plants (STPs) conducted between April 17 and April 22. The review revealed that only nine STPs were fully functional and meeting prescribed standards, while the remaining 12 were either underperforming or directly discharging untreated or partially treated sewage into drains, nallahs, and nearby water bodies.
Civic officials flagged the violations as a significant risk to both public health and the environment. Improper disposal of sewage, especially in densely populated areas, can contaminate water sources and heighten the chances of disease outbreaks.
The municipal administration has warned housing societies to immediately restore proper functioning of their STPs and ensure reuse of treated water. Authorities indicated that failure to comply could lead to stricter measures, including suspension of water supply.
As per regulations, residential complexes with 100 or more flats or a built-up area of at least 20,000 square metres must install and maintain STPs. Within PCMC limits, 494 such societies fall under this category, and previous assessments have shown that nearly 99 of them have non-functional treatment systems.
