Pune, April 27, 2026:
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has announced a statewide audit of sewage treatment plants (STPs) and waste segregation systems in large housing societies, with strict action to be taken against violators.

MPCB Chairman Siddhesh Kadam made the announcement during a press conference in Pune on Sunday. He was speaking on the sidelines of the Recycling Vision Series 202 conference organised by Plastic Recycling Show India and Bharat Recycling Show.

Kadam stated that the board will assess whether sewage treatment systems in large residential complexes are functioning properly and whether waste segregation practices are being followed as per guidelines. The audit will be conducted across the state, covering both major cities and smaller urban areas.

Highlighting environmental concerns, Kadam noted that untreated sewage continues to contribute significantly to water pollution, while lack of waste segregation is increasing soil contamination. He emphasized that strict penal action will be taken against housing societies that fail to comply with the revised Solid Waste Management guidelines issued by the central government.

In addition, the MPCB will also inspect Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) plants in Pune to ensure they adhere to air pollution control norms. Industry operators have been urged to follow prescribed regulations to minimize environmental impact.

Kadam clarified that the board’s approach is not limited to punitive action, but also includes providing technical guidance and support to industries and local self-government bodies to ensure effective pollution control.

As part of broader environmental initiatives, Recycling Vision conferences will be held in cities including Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, and Ratnagiri, aiming to promote circular economy practices and encourage participation from young entrepreneurs in the recycling sector.

He further informed that a technical survey of a stretch of the Mula-Mutha River will be conducted jointly by the MPCB, Pune Municipal Corporation, and the Water Conservation Department, in compliance with court directives.

Kadam also stressed the importance of adopting modern technologies and ensuring public participation in achieving long-term pollution control goals across Maharashtra.
