Why Tourist Safety Still Takes A Backseat At Dams And Popular Spots In Pune ?Â
Pune, May 1, 2026: In a tragic series of incidents, four people drowned in separate locations across Maval on Friday, raising serious safety concerns for visitors at water bodies.
According to officials, three youths lost their lives at the Jadhavwadi dam near Navlakh Umbre after entering the water for a swim. The deceased have been identified as Ajay Garude, Santosh Edke, and Aniket Pawar. Preliminary information suggests that the trio misjudged the depth of the water and accidentally moved into a deeper section, where they began struggling and eventually drowned.
Rescue teams, including local volunteers, disaster response groups, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with the Talegaon Dabhade Fire Department, rushed to the spot and carried out search operations. The victims were later retrieved and taken to a hospital in Talegaon Dabhade, where doctors declared them dead.
In a separate incident on the same day, a 25-year-old man, identified as Manoj Bharat Gautam, drowned in the Pavana River near the old stone bridge between Salumbre and Gahunje. He had reportedly entered the river for a swim but was unable to gauge the water depth.
Emergency teams conducted a rescue operation and recovered the body, which was later sent for medical examination. Police have registered cases in both incidents and further investigations are underway.
Authorities have urged tourists and locals to exercise caution while visiting dams and rivers, especially during summer, when such accidents tend to increase.
