Pune, May 2, 2026: After years of anticipation, residents of NIBM Annexe, Mohamadwadi, and Undri are finally closer to receiving a reliable piped water supply. In a significant development, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) water department successfully conducted trial testing at the overhead water tanks located opposite Royale Heritage Mall in Mohamadwadi on April 2 morning.
Officials carried out water testing at the site, marking a crucial step toward operationalising the long-pending project. The successful trials have brought renewed hope to thousands of residents who have been dependent on water tankers for nearly a decade. The project’s progress also fulfills the assurance given by PMC Additional Commissioner Pavneet Kaur, who had earlier committed to expediting the process.
Speaking to Pune Pulse, PMC Additional Municipal Commissioner Pavneet Kaur expressed happiness over the progress, stating that the long-awaited dream of residents in NIBM Annexe, Mohamadwadi, and Undri is finally nearing reality. She said the civic body has worked on a war footing over the past few months to fast-track the project and address gaps identified earlier.
Kaur added that the technical issues flagged in recent months have now been resolved, enabling the successful completion of trial testing conducted on Saturday morning. She further informed that trials to supply water from the overhead tanks to individual housing societies will be carried out in the coming days. Appealing to residents and housing societies, she urged them to apply for official water connections with the Pune Municipal Corporation to ensure a smooth transition to the new piped water supply system.
The infrastructure includes three overhead water tanks—two with a capacity of 30 lakh litres each and one with a capacity of 15 lakh litres. Despite being constructed nearly eight years ago, these tanks had remained unused, becoming a point of concern and frustration among local residents. The recent testing indicates that the system is now ready to be integrated into the city’s water supply network.
Once fully operational, the project is expected to significantly reduce the reliance on private water tankers, ensuring a more consistent and cost-effective water supply. Residents have long struggled with irregular and expensive tanker services, especially during peak summer months.
With the successful completion of trials, the final phase of implementation is now in sight. Authorities are expected to complete the remaining formalities soon, bringing much-needed relief to the growing population in these areas. The development marks a major milestone in improving basic infrastructure and quality of life for residents in South Pune.
