Pune Sees Severe Blood Shortage, Forces Hospitals To Postpone Surgeries
Pune, May 5, 2026: The city has been grappling with a severe blood shortage for the past 15 days, significantly impacting patient care across hospitals. Due to insufficient blood stock, many medical facilities have been compelled to postpone scheduled surgeries.
The shortage has been attributed to a sharp decline in blood donation camps, largely caused by college vacations and the rising summer heat. Pune typically requires around 1,500 to 1,600 units of blood samples, but collections have dropped considerably in May, leading to a shortage of platelets and other essential components.
Although the number of blood banks in the city has increased from 35 to 48, a substantial gap persists between supply and demand.
This has made it especially challenging to arrange immediate blood transfusions for accident victims, maternity cases, and patients suffering from thalassemia.
Doctors, speaking informally, have indicated that the lack of donations partly due to fewer public events during the summer has begun to affect treatment outcomes for critically ill patients.
Experts have pointed out that Pune faces blood shortages every summer, suggesting that blood banks and transfusion authorities need to develop a long-term solution. They also noted that large-scale donation drives with 500 to 1,000 donors at a time may lead to wastage, advocating instead for smaller, more frequent camps.
Citizens are encouraged to prioritize donating blood at government-run blood banks to help stabilize supply.
