PMRDA budget allocation pushes ambitious tourism project forward, with plans for skywalk, adventure sports, and major road upgrades
In a major push to tourism infrastructure in Maharashtra, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has allocated ₹200.50 crore in its 2026–27 budget for the development of a glass skywalk in Lonavala, a project long envisioned by former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar.

The announcement was made during the PMRDA general body meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai, in the presence of deputy chief ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar. The project is expected to receive additional financial support, with officials anticipating ₹100 crore each from the Union government and the District Planning Committee.
The skywalk, planned as a world-class tourist attraction, will be constructed on approximately 15 acres of land located around 15 km from Lonavala. It will connect two of the region’s most popular viewpoints Lion’s Point and Tiger Point both of which already draw heavy footfall throughout the year.
At the heart of the project is a 125-metre-long and 6-metre-wide glass skywalk, designed to offer panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. In addition, a 90-metre-long bridge will form part of the structure, enhancing connectivity between key tourist spots.
The project is not limited to the skywalk alone. Authorities have planned a range of supporting facilities aimed at transforming the area into a comprehensive tourism hub. These include adventure activities such as zip-lining and bungee jumping, an amphitheatre with a seating capacity of 1,000 people, 24 gazebos for visitors, and extensive parking infrastructure accommodating up to 1,500 cars and 2,000 two-wheelers.
To manage the expected increase in tourist inflow, the PMRDA will also undertake road widening projects leading to Lion’s Point and Tiger Point. Currently, these locations attract nearly 10,000 visitors on weekends and around 2,000 on weekdays, and officials believe the new development will significantly boost tourism in the region.
The skywalk project forms part of a larger ₹4,628-crore PMRDA budget, with a substantial ₹3,895 crore earmarked for capital expenditure. This includes ₹2,919 crore for development works and ₹971 crore for land acquisition, primarily linked to infrastructure projects such as the proposed inner ring road aimed at decongesting Pune’s traffic.
In parallel, Chief Minister Fadnavis has directed the creation of a special purpose vehicle involving PMRDA and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for the development of twin tunnels between Katraj and Yerawada. The project is expected to enable seamless connectivity across major routes including Alandi Road, Mumbai-Pune Road, and Ahmednagar Road, significantly easing traffic congestion in the city.
Officials also confirmed that administrative processes for land acquisition related to the inner ring road are underway, and development plans for 23 newly merged villages under PMC are being prepared.
With the glass skywalk project moving closer to execution, authorities are positioning Lonavala as a premium tourism destination, blending natural beauty with modern infrastructure. If completed as planned, the project is expected to redefine the region’s appeal and attract visitors from across the country.
