Mumbai, 7th May 2026: A major breakthrough has emerged in the mysterious death case of four members of the Dokadia family in Mumbai’s Pydhonie area. Investigators have now confirmed that the deaths were caused by rat poison, and not by eating watermelon as initially suspected.
The shocking incident had taken place on April 26, when four family members, Abdullah Dokadia (44), his wife Nasreen (35), and their daughters Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13), died within a few hours of each other after falling seriously ill.
At first, it was believed that the family may have died due to food poisoning after consuming watermelon the previous night. However, forensic investigations have now revealed the presence of zinc phosphide, a chemical commonly used in rat poison, in the bodies of all four victims. The same chemical traces were also found in the watermelon samples.
According to officials, the family started experiencing vomiting, dizziness, and severe stomach pain soon after eating the fruit. They first visited their family doctor and were later rushed to JJ Hospital as their condition worsened.
One of the daughters was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital, while the second daughter died a few hours later. Soon after, both parents also succumbed.
The Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), under the leadership of Director Dr. Vijay Thakare, conducted several detailed tests and confirmed the presence of zinc phosphide. Investigators said the case was difficult to crack because much of the poison had been expelled through vomiting, making it harder to detect.
Police are now investigating how the poison entered the family’s system and whether it was a case of suicide or deliberate poisoning by someone else. The probe is ongoing.
