Pune: Encroachment On Front Margins By Shops, Hotels Creates Difficulties For Pedestrians In Wanowrie
Pune, May 8, 2026: Residents of Wanowrie have raised concerns over large-scale encroachment on front margins and footpaths by shopkeepers and hotel operators, making it difficult and unsafe for pedestrians to walk in the area. The issue was highlighted during a Mohalla Committee meeting held recently.
According to residents, several shops and hotels along major stretches such as Shivarkar Road, Salunkhe Vihar, and Kondhwa Road have extended their commercial activities beyond permitted limits. Footpaths and front margin spaces are allegedly being occupied with display items, tables, chairs, stalls, and other materials.

Citizens said the encroachments have forced pedestrians to walk directly on busy roads, increasing the risk of accidents and creating traffic congestion. Senior citizens, women, and children are reportedly facing the most inconvenience due to blocked walkways and reduced open spaces around buildings.
Residents also alleged that in some locations, traders have occupied parking spaces meant for vehicles, further adding to commuting difficulties in the area. They claimed that despite repeated complaints, the civic body’s encroachment department has failed to take consistent action against the violations.
Locals pointed out that action had recently been taken against illegal constructions and unauthorised hawkers by the anti-encroachment department of the Wanowrie Ward Office. However, citizens demanded that the Pune Municipal Corporation conduct regular anti-encroachment drives to prevent the problem from worsening.
