Pune: Frequent Accidents On Alandi Road Triggers Demand For Traffic Signals
Pune,May 11, 2026: Rising accidents at key junctions on Alandi Road have sparked concerns among residents, with the Pune Panther Sena demanding urgent installation of traffic signals and road safety infrastructure in the area.
According to the organization, three major junctions falling under Ward No. 2 — Safras Chowk, Mental Corner–Jail Road Chowk, and Shantinagar Tank Road Chowk — have become highly accident-prone due to poor traffic planning and lack of safety measures. Recently, a BRT bus and an auto-rickshaw collided near the stretch, though a major tragedy was narrowly avoided.
Speaking on the issue, Sachin Bhosale said the junctions have been designed improperly and continue to pose serious risks to motorists and pedestrians.
“There are no traffic signals, Newton circles, zebra crossings, or reflectors at these junctions. Both commuters and pedestrians are forced to navigate dangerous traffic conditions every day,” he said.
Bhosale pointed out that the traffic volume on Alandi Road has increased significantly over the years due to rapid growth in Lohgaon, Dhanori, Airport Road, Alandi, Dighi, and Vishrantwadi areas. Ongoing flyover and underground construction work at Vishrantwadi has further worsened congestion, while faulty traffic design has increased the likelihood of accidents.
The Pune Panther Sena stated that it had submitted a formal letter to the Pune Municipal Corporation and the Traffic Police Department nearly two years ago seeking installation of traffic signals at these junctions. Traffic police officials had reportedly conducted a site inspection and submitted a recommendation supporting the need for signals, but no action has been taken so far.
The organization also highlighted the safety concerns at Shantinagar Tank Road Chowk, where school students are forced to cross busy roads without adequate protection. The junction is located near educational and recreational facilities, including Nanasaheb Parulekar School, a swimming pool, and a gym, but lacks traffic police personnel or security guards.
Similarly, the Jail Road junction witnesses heavy congestion as vehicles approach from six different directions. The presence of major IT companies in the nearby commercial zone leads to thousands of employees using the road daily, increasing pressure on the already unsafe intersection.
Warning of protests if immediate action is not taken, Bhosale said residents are living in fear while crossing these junctions and urged authorities to urgently install traffic signals and implement road safety measures to prevent further accidents.
