Pune, May 11, 2026: Concerns over large-scale tree cutting on Nagar Road near Aga Khan Palace have sparked outrage among local residents and environmental activists. Social activist Sachin Bhosale has strongly criticised the alleged removal of roadside trees, claiming they were cut without any valid reason.

According to local residents, the trees along the stretch opposite Aga Khan Palace were not creating any obstruction, yet they were allegedly removed by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The incident has triggered anger among citizens, who fear that the tree cutting may be linked to future development or construction projects in the area.

Residents and activists alleged that continuous tree cutting in the name of urban development is severely affecting Pune’s green cover and harming the city’s environmental balance.

Highlighting the issue, Sachin Bhosale raised several concerns:

  • Civic officials often promise replantation after tree cutting, but in many cases, entire trees are allegedly being removed under the pretext of branch trimming without proper permission.
  • Decades-old trees that provided shade and helped maintain ecological balance are disappearing rapidly.
  • Heritage and historically significant trees are allegedly being cut in the name of road widening and infrastructure development.
  • Citizens believe alternative methods of road expansion can be implemented without destroying mature trees.

The issue of tree management by the Pune Municipal Corporation has also come under scrutiny earlier, with references being made to observations previously raised by the Bombay High Court regarding civic tree planning.

Warning the administration against further environmental damage, Sachin Bhosale said that stronger protests would be launched in the coming days if indiscriminate tree cutting continues in the name of development.
