Aadhaar Rules Changed: UIDAI Approves New Documents For Name, Address And DOB Updates
UIDAI has expanded the list of valid documents for Aadhaar enrolment and updates, making it easier for people to create or modify Aadhaar details such as name, address, date of birth and mobile number.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced major changes to Aadhaar enrolment and update rules by approving several new documents for identity verification.
The move is expected to make Aadhaar registration and correction processes easier for lakhs of people who previously faced difficulties due to strict documentation requirements.

Under the revised rules, separate document categories have been introduced for different groups, including children, transgender individuals, tenants and OCI cardholders.
New Rules For Children’s Aadhaar
UIDAI has simplified Aadhaar enrolment for children living in Child Care Institutions (CCIs). A certificate issued by the District Child Protection Officer will now be accepted as a valid document for Aadhaar registration.
This is expected to help orphaned and vulnerable children access identity documents more easily.
Special Provision For Transgender Individuals
For the first time, UIDAI has officially approved certain documents specifically related to transgender individuals for Aadhaar-related processes.
The step is being seen as an effort to make the Aadhaar system more inclusive and accessible.
OCI Cardholders Need Additional Documents
Under the revised guidelines, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders will now need:
- A valid foreign passport
- OCI card documents
during Aadhaar enrolment or updates.
Name Change Rules Relaxed
Earlier, passports were among the primary documents accepted for Aadhaar name updates. UIDAI has now expanded the list significantly.
The following documents can now be used for name correction or update:
- PAN card
- Voter ID
- Driving licence
- Government-issued ID cards
- Marriage certificate
For women changing names after marriage, the marriage certificate issued by the state or central government will now be considered valid proof.
If the marriage certificate contains a photograph, it may also work as identity, relationship and address proof. If there is no photograph, an old photo ID may additionally be required.
The revised rules also simplify name changes after divorce.
More Documents Accepted For Date Of Birth Update
Apart from birth certificates, the following documents are now accepted as date of birth proof:
- Passport
- Class 10 or 12 marksheet
- PAN card
- Government-issued identity card
Address Update Becomes Easier
UIDAI has also widened the list of valid address proof documents.
Apart from passports and bank documents, the following can now be used:
- Electricity bill
- Water bill
- Gas bill
- Rent agreement
- Police verification document
- Notarised document
- Voter ID
- Ration card
- Property tax receipt
- House tax receipt
However, utility bills must not be older than three months.
Tenants can also use rent agreements supported by police verification or notarised documents.
UIDAI has advised applicants to:
- Check the updated document list before visiting Aadhaar centres
- Carry original documents
- Use the correct mobile number
- Carefully verify all entered details
- Visit only authorised Aadhaar centres
The updated rules are expected to reduce delays and repeated visits for Aadhaar enrolment and corrections, especially for people who previously lacked conventional identity documents.
